Queensland designer Daniel Lightfoot dies on Christmas

Brisbane fashion designer Daniel Lightfoot has been remembered as a loving father and a man of “incredible talent” after passing away suddenly on Christmas Day at age 58.

Lightfoot shot to acclaim after Australia’s Miss World entrant Angelina Nasso donned his design in 1985.

Within 12 months, he earned himself the mantle of Queensland’s best designer.

He would go on to win 27 RAQ Fashion Design Awards and two Australian Fashion Awards, with his designs picked up by retail giant – David Jones.

His ex-wife of eight years, Suzie Lightfoot, shared a touching tribute to Daniel in the wake of his death.

“He is so loved by his beautiful daughter Paris (the light of his life) and his close family, Allison, Kenny, Elizabeth, Ben and Amy,” she wrote.

“Daniel touched so many lives through his incredible talent, craftsmanship and vision of beauty.

“He turned a simple piece of fabric into something truly magical and made the women he dressed shine like diamonds.”

Remaining close after their separation, she said his death would be felt among his colleagues, friends and clients in the Australian fashion industry.

“He will always be lovingly remembered for his wicked sense of humour and sharp wit, appreciation for French Champaign, diamonds and bling, yellow roses, love of a good party, expensive cars, and dancing like everyone was watching (because they were!),” Ms Lightfoot said.

“You are safe now and can be the man you want to be again in heaven dressing all those beautiful angels in your creations.”

His daughter Paris also shared a message of love to her father.

“Late last night heaven gained the most fashionable and hilarious Angel,” she wrote.

“I will love you forever Dadda and I will always be your princess P.”

Liza Minnelli and former Governor-General Quentin Bryce make up just some of his high-profile clientele throughout his career, which brought with it a raft of accolades.

Before his passing, Lightfoot remained active in the scene, mentoring aspiring designers at Queensland University of Technology’s fashion school.
